Merçè Balcells receives the 2019 MIT Excellence Award for “Advancing Inclusion and Global Perspectives”
The director of scientific research at MIT IMES (MIT Institute for Medical Engineering and Science) has been given this award in recognition of her brilliant scientific research career and for her efforts in promoting cross-border professional interchange between researchers, students and companies.
She is the founder of the MIT-Spain programme, which provides exchange opportunities between MIT and the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS) in Barcelona, offering internships to students from all over Spain. What’s more, she is the chair of the MIT IDEA2 Global programme, which connects and orients biomedical professionals and students across the globe.
Merçè Balcells has been chosen in a nomination process open to the entire MIT community, which is subsequently reviewed by a committee that evaluates the nominations and selects the award recipients in the different categories.
Upon learning that she had been chosen to receive the award, Merçè Balcells shared her joy by sending out appreciation e-mails to her collaborators, colleagues, students, friends and family. She said, “I feel that the award is also theirs. You can’t build global bridges alone”.
