I hold a degree in Physics and a master in Biophysics by the Universitat de Barcelona. I conducted my doctoral studies in the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, focusing my research in the functional roles and computational principles of collective oscillations exhibited by neuronal networks. I have worked in laboratories from different countries to combine theoretical and experimental approaches to understand the brain.  Despite studying different subjects within the field of Neuroscience I have long been interested in sleep, its changeover to wakefulness and vice versa. I have approached both brain states from separate perspectives and now, the “la Caixa” Fellowship, will allow me to carry out a project that aims at understanding how the brain can be virtually disconnected from the external sensory environment while we sleep. Besides tackling this fundamental scientific question to improve our knowledge about how the brain functions as an information processing organ, my project will also have an impact in the social notion of sleep. Sleep loss affects emotions and social functioning and sleep disorders impact morbidity and mortality in Europe. We need to know the mechanisms behind this phenomenon to make progress in health disciplines.
